Leading
KC Mayor Candidate Speaks to Platte County Group
Long-time
Northland resident and civic leader Mike Burke chose a
Platte
County
group as his first audience this past week after announcing his candidacy for
Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. Burke
addressed a full house at the Platte County Democrats-In-Action group’s
monthly meeting on November 5th to discuss some goals he would like to see
happen should he be elected. In
explaining his decision to enter the race, he recalled his initial call to
public service and his drive to solve problems in answering the often asked
question, “Why doesn’t somebody do something to fix it?”
Burke’s
long list of participation and accomplishments in city government, business
organizations and community groups make him a leading candidate for the office.
“I
know the goals the city needs to achieve and I know how to get there,” Burke
said in his remarks.
“The
Mayor needs to be the top salesman for bringing good jobs to
Kansas City
and that is not being accomplished now,” Burke added when naming his number
one priority of pursuing good jobs for residents.
Key
items of interest to Northland residents were Burke’s early work in advocating
for the safety of
Barry Road
, charitable work as former Director of Synergy Services, and involvement with
local chambers of commerce. Also
noteworthy, his recent work as lead attorney in the City and Port Authority's
sale of the former Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, a complicated transaction
requiring cooperation between federal, state and local agencies. This led to one
of the examples of Burke’s working knowledge of
Kansas City
’s role in the regional economy. He pointed out the important economic
relationship the city has with the airport and the fleets of trucks coming from
the vehicle assembly plants at Claycomo.
A
range of questions were answered dealing with city issues including education,
public transportation and city budget challenges.
Burke’s answers drew from his extensive experience with civic
organizations and his belief in professional management.
As far as what kind of personality Burke would bring to city hall he responded,
“What you see is what you get.” A
hard working, life time Kansas City Resident and Active Civic Leader throughout
his public and professional career.
