Picnic
at
Macken
Park
with Robin Carnahan
Missouri
Secretary of State and candidate for the U. S.
Senate Robin Carnahan was amazed when she arrived at the First Annual Northland
Picnic about 7:30 pm, Wednesday, June 24th. She said she had just come from a
fundraiser south of the river. All had been watching the sky and watching the
clouds gather. They could hear thunder and see lightning to the north. Robin
said she was thinking – “surely they have called off the picnic”. But, in
spite of temperatures above 90, a heat index over 100, and a gathering storm,
more than 240 people signed in to the picnic at
Macken
Park
. Nearly all stayed to meet Robin Carnahan and hear our next Senator from
Missouri
speak.
The
location was spectacular. What other shelter could keep 240+ people mostly dry
for dinner in the park in a thunderstorm? The cool breeze and lower temperature
brought relief!
We
lost electricity for Bill Skaggs’ presentation of the Northland Sage Award to
Bob and Clara Beth Saunders. It was restored just as Robin Carnahan arrived.
After
expressing her surprise that we were all there, Robin provided a little history
asking how long it’s been since
Missouri
had two Democratic Senators and a Democratic Governor (1968). Carnahan then
launched her message, “Having Washington focus on issues that matter to
Missourians is long overdue - like rebuilding our economy so that it works for
everyone, reforming our health care system and freeing our nation from the grip
of foreign oil.” It was a rousing speech that touched on many pressing issues.
She stayed afterwards to talk to individuals and take pictures.
Many thanks to Jean Eaglesfield, the Northland Democratic Club, the Clay and
Platte County Democratic Central Committees and the many hands that made this
event possible!
